Contribution of cashew nut production to economic growth in Côte d'Ivoire
Summary: Cashew nut production in Côte d'Ivoire has become an increasingly important cash crop alongside cocoa, rubber, oil palm and cotton, and generates both non-tax and tax resources for the country. This study analyzes the contribution of cashew nut production to Côte d'Ivoire's economic growth. To achieve this objective, an ARDL model was adopted, based on time series data from 1980 to 2022. The main results show that cashew nut production contributes positively to economic growth in the long term, under the control of a good level of public investment, good control of corruption and good political stability. In the short term, however, its contribution inhibits the country's economic performance due to the low level of processing of agricultural products and the deterioration in the terms of trade. It would therefore be useful to strengthen cashew processing mechanisms through a structuring agricultural policy.
