Fuel consumption in Benin and price differential

between the formal and informal sectors: An analysis using Hansen’s threshold model.

Abstract : The Benin petroleum market is subject to parallel petroleum products distribution since the years 1980 area expressed by the coexistence and simultaneous functioning of an official market embodied by the oil stations and a parallel market embodied by oil stalls-place of sale round the corner. To stock up on, the petrol consumer according to some quick accounts of opportunity cost, apply to one or other of the two markets. This paper analyzes from the estimation of a threshold model, the point of the differential price (formal price – informal price) which defines the two opposite’s behaviors of petrol consumer. The results show that the petrol consumer is faithful to the consumption of the smuggling petrol when the differential price formal price - informal price” exceeds the point of: " minus fifteen francs CFA" (“-15 francs CFA”). In the contrary, he gets unconditionally attached to stock up with the petrol stations.
