Determinants of vegetable crops practices and effects on the income of rice farming households in Benin

Abstract: With the serious difficulties affecting the cotton sector, the Benin government has undertaken a policy to support the diversification of the portfolio activities of rural households in order to protect them from risks of poverty and food insecurity. Certain strategic agricultural sectors such as rice and vegetable crops are therefore enjoying sustained interest. This study aims to identify the determinants of diversification and isolate the impact of diversification on income of households in rice production systems. Logit model of the propensity score was used to analyze the determinants of diversification while Average Treatment Effect and Local Average Treatment Effect models are used to assess the impact of diversification on net farm income of households. The results show that family labor, access to credit, participation in agricultural training and the presence of birds in the field are the main determinants of the diversification of sources of income with a positive impact on the net agricultural income of rice farmers between 93,500 FCFA and 114,700 FCFA.
