Socioeconomic and institutional determinants of adoption of improved maize varieties in Central South of Burkina Faso

Abstract: Maize is one of the main cereals in Burkina Faso. It plays a leading role in food security for the population. According to the Permanent Secretariat for Coordination of Agricultural Sectorial Policies of the Ministry of Agriculture, maize is a staple food for the population with a self-consumption rate of 88.57%. The share of maize in food is estimated at about 16%. A good identification of the factors that influence the adoption of improved maize varieties can help to influence policy. The objective of this study is to analyze the determinants of the adoption of improved cowpea varieties in central-south of Burkina Faso. To do this, 200 maize producers were surveyed. The econometric results showed that the variables influencing adoption are age, area, membership of a peasant organization, number of cattle, distance to market, contact with the agricultural agent, Market value and good taste.
